MPs, BBO randoms. 5+1 got us 17.8%. 4+1 would have been worth maybe 60-65%, 6 would have been worth 85-90%.

So who's to blame, and what are they to blame for not reaching?

South just bids 1 more over 5D and life goes on. When 6D makes, he gets the credit. When it goes down, he gets the blame. South's pass gets the blame here. Doesn't matter whether it was right or wrong.

If North had bid 4S over 4D, he would have been operating..making a statement that he is the boss; and if 4S scored better than the Diamond contract he would get full credit and full disdain.

With this partner, apparently he would be successful..and this partner would probably never notice the slam in diamonds was missed.

At MPs, I'd simply bid 4 .

North has a 5 loser hand and a 7 card suit. With the intermediates, the suit should have no more than 2 losers against 4-2 and 3-3 distributions if opener is void or against 4-1 and 3-2 distributions if opener has a stiff.

If South has the right cards, a slam may make. But 4 seems like a good spot to play. After a preempt, it's important to get to a good spot rather than the perfect spot.

Although South has no fit, South should realize North has long s and pass.

If South decides to bid 5 over 4 , then North should raise to 6 . After a 5 bid, 4 seems like a pretty sure make. In that case, 5 making 5 rates to be a bad result. 6 off 1 won't be much worse. 5 making 6 just equals 4 making 4, but loses to 4 making 5. So bidding 6 isn't going to penalize you much if it doesn't make, but changes an average or below average board to the a top/near top when it does.
