How do you rate North's hand in defense? What should North do?

First X: 4+ hearts

Second X: N/S play forcing pass in this situation, so x shows a minimum hand for the bidding.

My gripe is with North's 2H bid. Much better to jump raise 3H (showing a shapely hand with 5+C and 4+H). Now South will know to bid rather than defend.

With all HCP based invites I'd start with 2S.

If south knew his partners hand he would certainly want to defend. The DK is almost always on our right on this auction. We will usually take 1 heart and 3 diamond tricks, not always sometimes hearts are 5-0 and righty is like 7051 but it's matchpoints and overall we will typically go + vs 4S X and minus at the 5 level.

Souths double seems totally fine with that diamond holding. The fact that the opponents bidding had no relation to what their hands was is unfortunate.

My opinion is that you shouldn't be playing forcing pass here, and if you are you should have a better agreement than double shows a minimum.

However, the problem on this layout isn't our system, it's East's lucky guess that West has twice failed to bid spades when he should.
