What should North do? First X: 4+ heartsSecond X: N/S play forcing pass in this situation, so x shows a minimum hand for the bidding. mcphee
Difficult hand not knowing about the huge club fit after ths double and LHO bidding it all alone. Partner could have a D lenght, but we have no H tricks to speak of. I would pull to 5C frankly, partner likely has 3. Rather nice flop for never having bid. wanoff
Better for South to show the club fit, if available, with an inverted raise.Or North to mini-splinter(not to everyone's liking) and the double dummy defence could be found. ggwhiz
Too tough for me, I'm -790. East bid solo and got lucky. West couldn't even scrape up a 2♠ bid???? If it's a long imp match, this pair will not survive. Luckily my partner (deep finesse) leads Ace and a small diamond. B-)
WesleyC
My gripe is with North's 2H bid. Much better to jump raise 3H (showing a shapely hand with 5+C and 4+H). Now South will know to bid rather than defend. With all HCP based invites I'd start with 2S.

The DK is almost always on our right on this auction. We will usually take 1 heart and 3 diamond tricks, not always sometimes hearts are 5-0 and righty is like 7051 but it's matchpoints and overall we will typically go + vs 4S X and minus at the 5 level. Souths double seems totally fine with that diamond holding. The fact that the opponents bidding had no relation to what their hands was is unfortunate.
killer_
Thanks for the replies! Seems like opinions are really divided on this one. Are there any opinions or advice in general in choosing to defend with 6-4 or 5-5 hands?
Aardv
My opinion is that you shouldn't be playing forcing pass here, and if you are you should have a better agreement than double shows a minimum. However, the problem on this layout isn't our system, it's East's lucky guess that West has twice failed to bid spades when he should. eagles123
Aren't we taking first 4 tricks?
killer_
Aren't we taking first 4 tricks? That's with highly double dummy defence..
whereagles
am I seeing this right??? West has two super-fillers, yet she passes throughout.. and it's overcaller who, in the dark, self-propells himself into a (making) sac?
