If you give opener 16 HCP, there are 24 HCP left for the other 3, giving an average of 8 each. You hold 10 a queens worth more than the average to expect. You have a 6 card suit and your K's should be well placed.

I don't think one could qualify bidding 2 as unsound,at least not NV.

NV against Vul.

You hold:

52

KT9632

A32

K2

RHO deals and opens 1NT (15-17). You play natural overcalls over their NT.

Playing with a relatively new partner, we have an agreement to play a sound style in competing.

Do you bid at Matchpoints? At IMPs?

Thanks a lot :)

To me B) "sound" means at LEAST an opening bid - so at IMPS and MP's I will PASS ---- ESPECIALLY as RHO shows 15-17 :D

2 is very sound, it's a 7-loser hand.

Bearmum: If they open a strong NT points you cannot wait until you have an opening bid. Besides, the Kings in this hand are almost aces (behind the strong hand)

Good playing strength, good intermediates in , long enough suit. What's keeping you?

I dont think 2H is a very sound call. Changing Ck to HQJ i would say it is.

I think your suit is just too ropey to bid here. Part of playing good bridge is avoiding stupid results (such as going for -1100 vs nothing) so I pass. A bid here should show either (or preferably both) a good hand or a good suit. This is neither.

NV if you go for 1100 on that one I think they have slam and they are vul !!

Do you bid at Matchpoints? At IMPs?

To me the key phrase in the scenario was you "have an agreement" with partner. Yes, left to my own devices, I would bid 2H regardless. HOWEVER, for whatever reason, I have agreed "to play a sound style in competing" with a relatively new partner. This game is all about building a partnership, and I am assuming the goal is to develop a long term partnership with this person.

So, at IMPs, I will bid 2H and justify myself later, if needed (shouldn't be necessary if this is a partner I'm thinking about keeping), but at MP I will pass, taking the short term loss for the long term gain in partnership trust, and re-discuss agreement later. :)

I felt an explanation would be nice, since I was the only one to vote this way. I will be interested to read any reactions.

I think "sound", as a partnership agreement, should read "constructive". In other contexts, it may mean that you don't want to go for -1100, but that's not something you need to make agreements about.

If the agreement applies to overcalls over 1NT, I would pass, but that can hardly be the case, at least not nonvulnerable at matchpoints. So I guess 2 is ok.
