It's just a simple choice of your first call. There is no trick to it, no right/wrong answer - I am simply curious what is your preferred bidding style when it comes to overcalls.

Red versus green, your right hand opponent opens natural 1. You hold:

AJ82

A74

2

AK1053

Obvious Raptor over 1--inappropriate over 1, with me Raptor implies lack of support for the fourth suit.

Really?? You are FAR too good for a Polish NT overcall over anything, (sometimes called Raptor). PNT is in the range of 9-14. On this hand I X.

Really not if for a partnership it shows 9-14, I assumed from the poll that this hand is in range or only slightly out of it for the methods being used, and surely some people must play Polish/Raptor with a stronger range than the 9-14 that you cite as best/most common range, I defer to your expertise about the best range for it--I don't actually play the convention. But if Raptor is possible as a reasonable choice over 1, it must be a reasonable choice over a 1 opening, where the shape is right.

My main point is, that even if a partnership deems Raptor right on values over 1, it is wrong on shape. I could have presented this better.

Interesting. I'd have bid 2 over this, on the grounds that my suit is excellent, doubling risks losing it (I'd X on a lot of hands with eg Qx in clubs, and I don't rate myself strong enough to X and then bid them), and I hope to be able to double later to show pretty much this shape.

Am I right in thinking the hands doublers fear are basically those with 8 card fits in the majors mediocre points and no great club fit, where 2 gets passed out with game on?

Well those are awful situations indeed but even if someone told me 'hey you will have to play a 2-level contract. There is no game.' I'd double since I have such awesome support for both majors. I feel like +> (where each symbol means the likelihood to find a nice contract there).
