What are your methods here?

Do you have a bid?

What is 4NT? What is 4NT by partner?

Say you pass, because double is takeout, and partner bids 4. What do you bid now?

Double would be takeout. It would be my choice on 4333 with the same points but I lean towards pass on this hand (trusting partner to act on hands with very short hearts).

I prefer to balance very aggressively in this kind of situation so I won't force to slam, but 5C into 5H should show something like this hand and rates to be safe.

Double is definitely takeout, and I would pass here. I would also pass partner's Double because my ODR is so low.

EDIT - Since partner bid 4 however, I am in a bind. I will take the low road by passing and collecting the game bonus. I have a bad feeling that if I bid 6, it goes Club ruff, Ace for -1.

IMO

  1. Double = Competitive, 4/4/4N/5 = NAT, 5 = 2-suiter.
  2. Pass = 10, 4N = 9, Double = 8.
  3. Over 4, 4N = Natural seems a sensible meaning. Or it could be straight Blackwood.
  4. 4N (Keycard) = 10, 5N (Pick a slam) = 9, 6 = 8, 6N = 7, 5 (Blame transfer) = 6.

Pass

Opposite an aggressive partner, I pass again.

With a passive partner, I bid 6.

I don't invite. Partner wont know when to accept.
