You are right, and thank you for the thoughtful reply. I do find it hard to be disciplined and the honest reason is because I'm bored and feel like doing silly things just for the fun of it. Playing with robots doesn't help in that sense :)

Too true! Last year I was prepping for the NAPs with an actual human partner, and I had to cut myself off from the robot tourneys because I was picking up too many bad habits.

FWIW that partner and I played a strong-club system with light openings, and that's an easy 1 opener. But without having spent hours with P learning and practicing a system that supports bidding on such an airy collection, I wouldn't dream of it.

FWIW I play a strong-club system with what I thought were light openings, but this is nowhere near a 2nd in hand vulnerable 1 opener for me.

Our 1/ are 8-14, could be only 4 if 10-14. But change a K to a Q in the example hand and it's a pass; 8-9 requires more shape. I don't know if it's a theoretically sound system, but I've had some good results and a lot of fun with it.

All vul, IMPs, 2nd seat. You are playing with a BBFer. Would you open?

Oh sure! Though certainly not with a random partner playing a standard system.

But I used to play a 9-to-14-point balanced 1NT opening where we would systematically open hands such as these even if one of the kings were a queen. The system worked well but was quite intricate (and had to be), some 90 % of the subsequent auction had to be alerted. It was also fun to play at least for us. For other players it may be a little bit tiring - when your opponents open 1NT 50 % of the time ... :)

Recently I started playing a 2 opening with exactly 5 cards in below opening strength, a kind of 5-card weak-two. Your hand can be opened 2 in this system though I wasn't actually thinking of 5-card suits starting with an 8. I don't have enough experience yet with the system to say how well this one works.

With this hand partner would bid 3NT right away in both cases. No discussion necessary.

You used big words like system and intricate, right?

It seems with these companion hands, there will be a strong NT opening and 3NT will be reached --- for a probable wash except the embarrassment at having opened 1S and the lack of a confident redouble.
