I'd like to think that if asked as a poll question the answer would be unanimous, but I am sure that some posters here would claim that in their methods they would always open this. I wouldn't open this playing an aggressive big club method.

It is a poll. And it is unanimous so far :)

All vul, IMPs, 2nd seat. You are playing with a BBFer. Would you open? [/hv]

Playing with a BBFer Pass= 10, 1 = 6. (Inadequate strength, Poor suit, Poor lead, Poor rebid, undermines partnership confidence. But, playing in a regular partnership, with appropriate agreements, I would open.

Your judgement has become super warped if you think this might be a hand people would open. If you added the SJ a minority of players (maybe not a minority of forumers) would open it. Maybe you watch on vugraph or w/e and you see people opening really light, but that is systemic and it is definitely not normal to even consider opening this hand.

Normal bridge with balanced hands is you open 12 or a hand worth 12. Even Jxxxx and an 11 count is an aggressive opener with such a bad suit even with A K K and a T. Opening a 5332 10 count with 5 small is not in the game. You can agree to open lighter than normal but even then, this hand is probably not in the game unless you have extremely aggressive opening agreements that very few people (relative to the bridge playing population) have.

Nah, I didn't really think it was an opening. It was more of a "I'll just open and let's see what happens" bid, and while I did that I was thinking "I bet at least some BBFers would open this in their partnerships and have methods to stay low". I guess I was wrong, the line is not THAT low, even with spades :D

This was played in Sunday's BBF Indy. I opened and the bidding went:

[hv=d=w&v=b&b=4&a=p1sp2dp2np3nppdrppp]133|100[/hv]

I of course started to prepare a long list of apologies. Dummy tabled:

[hv=pc=n&s=sq2haj8da8532ckq4]133|100[/hv]

Down one, when jinx-opps took1 diamond and 4 spades.

I found it funny. Only reason I posted was, as Aqua astutely remarked, to see if I can get anyone to open it :P

I know this thread is not that serious but that is a serious leak in almost everyone's game. As you get better at bridge it becomes less "fun" because playing good bridge is all about being disciplined. This might seem funny coming from me since I generally play very aggressive styles in my partnerships in most spots, but I am "disciplined" in the terms of what my partner expects and what my style dictates.

For instance, I was second seat all vul last week and I had QJT9876 xxx x xx. It went pass to me. My partner and I are quite sound 2nd seat red so I passed. This seemed silly since this spade suit is meant to be bid, but my partner will expect more/better for a 2nd seat red 2S bid. Of course it went 2N p 3D p 4H AP and my partner had Axxx x Qxxx Axxx so that was a double game swing lol, but the point is I was disciplined within my style. I did not just say "you know lets preempt and see what happens," if it was +EV to do so then that would be my style.

Opening this hand or bidding in general with light hands to see what happens is more fun and it can definitely work. But if it usually worked it would be normal. Whenever you take an unusual action you really need a reason to do so, most people would be well served by attempting at all times to do what is "normal" because it is normal for a reason. Being disciplined is not that fun, but winning/doing better is also fun. When you have the urge to do something that you know is not correct or normal, ask yourself if you think it is really best, or if you are just bored and want to bid to see what happens. IMO.

As you get better, taking actions you know are probably bad but might work will become less fun :(

You are right, and thank you for the thoughtful reply. I do find it hard to be disciplined and the honest reason is because I'm bored and feel like doing silly things just for the fun of it. Playing with robots doesn't help in that sense :)

Yes, playing with robots you can try out different styles (including some weired styles and semipsychs) and see if it works. It doesn't lead to partnership trust errosion. Playing with a human p it is good to keep in mind that it is more fun if partner bids disciplined.

10 HCP, but ...

- A balanced hand.

- No honour combinations.

- Points are in the short suits.

- Only an average number of 10s and 9s.

I would value this as a 9 count at best. I wouldn't dream of opening it ... particularly in second seat!

I sometimes play with team-mates who play a mini no trump (10-12). But I rather suspect that this hand is too weak even for them!

I play mini-NT (10-13) nonvul in 1st & 2nd seat along with 10 HCP openers under those conditions. Since our methods do not allow for 5 card major mini 1NT openings, this is a 1 opener under those conditions (unless we decide to treat the spade suit as 4 cards, in which case we open 1NT).

Vul? Not a chance.
