gordontd
What would 3H now be? Don't think we should give up on slam yet since it's not hard to construct hands where a grand is good.
mgoetze
When we bid this we had pretty much no agreements but afterwards were both of the opinion that 3♥ would have been natural.

mgoetze
4♥. Don't see any alternatives.Heart splinter? That's certainly ... creative. No alternatives to showing heart shortness you say? Hm.

mgoetze
isn't 4♥ natural?Well, I don't know. Should it be? What do you do if you do have heart shortness?
gszes
This is more difficult w/o an explanation concerning the1n bid (nat or sandwich). If nat surely p will recognize a 3h bid as a 2 suiter looking for slam since our side cannot have more than say 25 hcp. We should not give up on slam sinceit takes very little to make 6 even if we have a spade loserwhich the 1n bid seems to indicate. With these particular tools a 2h bid would seem to be naturaland invitational (same as would a 3c or 3d bid) and I would consider the bid forcing to at least 2/3s. This would make a 3h bida standout for slam tries and the only thing you give up would bewhen a 44 heart fit makes 2/3/4 and a 53 spade fit makes less.I have to admit I would prefer 4h (like 4c/d to be a splinter). If the 1n was sandwich we could reasonably be much stronger but a really bad heart split looms and slam seems far lesslikely as the hand will play poorly. I would just bid 4s and hope it makes. Jinksy
Feels to me like 2♥ should be forcing to 2♠, in which case might as well try it. But I don't play supp Xes, so don't know how it's normally played
mgoetze
Well, I was playing against GIB, so 1NT was natural but GIB thought our 1♥ was natural too...
whereagles
Well, I don't know. Should it be? What do you do if you do have heart shortness? I dunno either. Maybe 4♥ should indeed be splinter because with 55 or better you already know you have a major fit, so no need to show hearts. Anyway, thinking of it 4♠ is really safer, as it guarantees no mix-up. You can always discuss stuff with pard later.
