Most online games allow people to play without revealing their name, location, etc. you could make your profile not private, but not have any information listed on it. "Other games are played by rules known by the players" What "rules" do you suggest are concealed from (ie not "known by") the players on BBO? For the avoidance of doubt, "Private" profile is currently within the rules of BBO, and publicised as such. Points to note:01) Little reliance can be placed on a self assessed competence. Even assuming honesty. And honesty should not be assumed.02) Honesty is, if anything, less reliable an assumption where someone is obliged to self-assess competence who would prefer to state private.03) Accordingly, permitting "private" as an option enhances, albeit marginally, the reliance that can be placed on a non-private self assessment of competence.04) In a tournament, except in an individual, you are not obliged to partner a player with a private profile.05) In an individual tournament, it is questionable what value is to be gleaned from partner's self assessment of competence. It is not as if you have a choice whether to partner them.06) Except in a tournament, you are not obliged to play either with or against a player with a private profile07) Outside of a tournament, you can bar private profile players from your table by the simple expedient of acting as table host.08) Outside of a tournament, you can choose not to sit opposite a sitting player with a private profile.09) Outside of a tournament, you can leave a table at any time if you are unhappy with any of the present players, whether partner or opponents, and whether their profile is or is not influential in that choice.10) In a face to face game, you generally have no right to know the individual's self assessment of competence, whether partner or opponents. Why should online play be any different? I could go on.
