4th best againt 3NT?

Recommended Posts

You are West.

You hold AT9, 2, KQ864, KT72. (spades, heart, diamonds, clubs)

Bidding:

North in the first seat opens 1S.

Then it goes Pass- 1NT - Pass- 3NT.

Scoring is Matchpoints.

Say you decide to lead a diamond.

What card would you lead? the 4th best or the K? Or something else?

What is your reasoning?

Would it matter if the scoring was different?

Thanks.

Hi, the normal lead with this diamond suit is fourth best so that is what I will reccomend on the B/I forums

The right answer should not depend on the skill of the person/forum, at least in analysis. Please don't worry about your explanation going over our heads. We will try our best to understand and won't waste too much of your time ;)

I am leading 4th best here.(no matter what your level his)

I agree with Jlall, you would better by following simple leading rules. learning beyond that is very hard and should only be made with a complete work, like reading mike laurence's book on lead which i did. Any shorter way would lead to more mistakes based on "logic" then good leads.

Another benefit of leading by the simple rules is giving partner all the information.

There is a book by the granoveters which suggest you lead robot leads based on a list of priority that could look like this 1. AK, 2. KQJ, 3. singleton... this mean if you didnt lead an A partner know for sure you dont have an AK.

I dont like this approach but the simplicity logic of it is a good one.

I'm convinced leading the 2nd longest suit with 5-4 is a lot of times better than leading your 5 card. However there are some exceptions...

IF you want to lead a , I think you should lead the smallest you have. Leading the K is silly since you don't have backup in the suit. You also have a great falsecard and some entries, so probably no need for partner to count your hand, so fool the opponents.

I think that I should consider that I play matchpoints. Leading low diamond leads very often to losing a diamond trick on W and that leads to bad score. So in my opinion the best choice is K. Of course if I play imps, I would choose low diamond because it gives more chances to defeat the contract.
