A 3nt contract

Recommended Posts

My partner was a player with advanced ranking. Ops opened the bidding and my partner bid 1nt. I had 10 high card points so I bid 2nt. Partner bid 3nt. He had no profile. Turns out he had eleven high card points and went down several tricks and booted me from the table. I'm not objecting to the boot, but I think he was way off to overcall 1nt unless he held at least 15 pts. I've noticed the players who rank themselves advanced or higher are the ones more likely to lack sportsmanship. I realize there are many exceptions. :)

There are plenty of players who will do stupid things, then boot their partner. It has happened to me. I just mark them as enemy and sit elsewhere.

If my partner overcalled a natural 1NT and I had a 10 count, I would not invite - I would force to game.

You invited game and he accepted with his 11 count? That is impressive.

Don't assume that all players who self-rate as Advanced or higher are poor sports. But there certainly are enough of them.

I didn't assume all players did. I only know it about some, but thanks.

maybe you left out a minor important detail from the story... Partner was a passed hand, so his 1N cannot show 15+ points.

Although to be fair, North was also a passed hand. So he can't have an invitational hand either.

It was his mistake, not yours. The best move is not to play with these type of players.

Anyone likes the natural 1NT bid with the passed hand?

Depending on how things have been going, I do... One of my favorite auctions, at a Las Vegas NABC many years ago, with first-time partner:

P-(1)-P-(1)

P-(1)-P-(1)

1N

RHO asks me what pard's 1N means. "He wants to play 1N." "But what does he have?" "I neither know nor care; he wants to play 1N." Many matchpoints for +90.

IMO, the average player on BBO doesn't know what they're doing, even if they think they do. Doesn't matter what they have self-rated themselves.

If your left hand opponent opened and your partner overcalled 1 NT with 11 hcps, your partner has no idea how to play bridge. OTOH, if your RHO opened and your partner overcalled 1 NT after two passes, he can do that with 11 hcps, and you were wrong to raise. You should pass or perhaps bid a 5-card suit. His correct call with 11 hcps is to bid the 1 NT provided he has a solid stop in the adverse suit and a balanced hand. If he has a better hand such as 15-18 hcps, he would double. Hence, his overcall promises less than 15 hcps.

If your partner deals and passes the opening and it goes around the table so your LHO opens, and then your partner overcalls 1 NT, that is Unusual NT asking for a minor.
