Opening one of a major

Recommended Posts

Opening one of a major and partner bids 2nt. Nothing listed in either profile re Jacoby or anything else other than Standard American system, I take the 2nt to mean 11-12 high card points. Twice lately, partner has insisted it means he holds an opening nt hand. Am I mistaken?

1M - 2NT is a natural invite in Acol, SEF and Forum D. In SAYC it is natural and game forcing. In full Forum D+ (and probably 2/1 although that is open to interpretation) it is a GF raise. In an undefined SA variant it could be any of these. It is also not uncommon to modify the meaning by agreement. A simple solution is a. never make the bid undiscussed, and b. if partner makes the bid just reply 3NT if this seems at all reasonable, then check what they actually held afterwards.
