Bidding the slam

Recommended Posts

May I ask the mathematicians what is the percentage of success taking into account the violent distribution the opponents also may have and the MARKED trump lead? Drury is out of question since there is no 3 card support in spades. It is easier to give various sequences leading to 6H when we see all cards. It is very difficult on the table.Partner does not know your exact honor holding in the 3 suits. You may be through or going down in 6 hearts. And if opponents are wise enough they will bid the grand in diamonds. What do you do now? Bid 7H?

Your choice of system. None vulnerable; S deals and passes.

[hv=pc=n&w=sq7hq8652dcaj9752&e=sa9642hakj3djtck8&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=p]266|200[/hv]

How does your auction proceed? NS are silent throughout.

As a variation, N makes a minimum sufficient bid in diamonds at her first turn, which S then raises to 5. I was surprised that we were the only pair in the room to find 6.

Pretty easy after Wilkosz.

2d. 2nt

3c. 3d

3h 3s

3n 4c

4s

resp asks and opener shows the shape up to 4s. Now 4nt is a control ask.

Most pairs will have been playing Acol of some description; I suspect a lot of auctions went P-1S/1N-2H/4H-end.

If you respond to 1 with an Acol 1NT on this hand you just have to follow up with 4 rather than 4 to show how your hand has grown up. For most Acolites (who have never heard of Drury other than it being previously banned as a psyche control) the West hand would be worth a 2 response too.

Since we are now onto Wilkosz, it looks like Muiderberg might also work, something like 2 - 2NT; 3 - 3; 4 showing a max with 5 hearts, 5+ clubs and a diamond void ought to be enough to encourage East to go for it.

I have been a Marty Bergen fan since I met him many moons ago. Then I read his book POINTS, SHMOINTS. To open, he taught the rule of 20. Add up your HCP, then add the number of cards to that in the two longest suits. If it adds up to 20, then open. Ever since I started doing this, I have found games and slams that would never have been found otherwise. So, without further ado:

W--E

1--1

2--2

3--4NT (0314)

5--6

9 HCP plus 6 plus 5=20. All of my regular partners open the same way.

If i don't remember wrong this book in Italy had to be titled "Non contate i punti" talking about defence bidding and suggest to make so it and, than, not for the line of ending declarer but just on regard opp. Is it right ?
