I posted this North hand in the I/A Forum and asked what people would bid in first seat. (http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/66660-plan-for-preempting/) Only 1 of 20+ respondents would open 2♥, and that one specified that he'd show ♦A over 2NT. So, what criteria is GIB using to make his decisions on this hand?

A lot. Change the vulnerability by one notch, change the level at which someone preempts by one full level, generally. (The ones who passed or opened 4H will still not consider 2H. But many of the 3H votes will either consider 2H or actually do it.)

I would pass the North hand in 1st seat with perhaps one exception, at favorable when I'd consider 4H. In this case I would reach 4H on a Texas transfer sequence.

Would be addressed for review, but meantime:

 

- bidding new suit as feature ( QJ+ in suit ) shows 8+HCP by opener. 8-10 actually.

- bidding 3NT shows AKQ in the suit. So 9+ at least.

 

- bidding 3M is not really helpful for responder at the moment as could have spread HCP ( alone queen(s) ) but none of the above to be qualified as good hand. So it's ambiguously "weaker" hand.
