I have a reasonable expectation of taking 2 tricks against the opponents heart contract.

If partner has a typical vulnerable preempt, he should have KQJxxxx of diamonds. Could he have another trick on defense (no doubt in spade)? It is possible, but unlikely. In addition, there is a reasonable chance that our KQx of hearts is worth only one trick on defense.

What about partner having zero or one club? That is certainly possible given our hand. It is also possible that partner has no hearts, and, if the opps lead a heart, partner will get one or two pitches on the KQx of hearts.

I may be unduly optimistic, but making 6 is not out of the realm of possibilities. In any event, 6 is likely to be a cheap sacrifice, and I am not holding out great hope of beating 5.

I bid one more.

Hmmm, not sure. I mostly agree, except the bit about the reasonable chance that KQx is only one trick on defense. Righty opened and rebid the suit at the five level, unsupported. I highly doubt he is doing this on a jack high suit. Although, you may still be right, if ops final contract is spades, which is very possible.

Anyway, I also bid one more. Who knows, maybe they will too, and go down.

Obvious pass. 2nd choice is X, because I expect to defeat the opps here. I would guess I hare 2 trump tricks and pd is highly likely to have an extra trick for his vul bid. Obvious pass! 6D is idiotic.

Why are we expecting them to play 5? From the auction and our hand we know they have at least a 6-3 spade fit if not 7-3 spade fit. I would be much better defending 5 contract than 5 or 6 contracts and I would not do something that will scare them off the heart contract. So double is out of question for me. About bidding 6, If they are making 5 we may give them only -500 instead of -650, but this is hardly an achievement at IMPS. Otoh defeating them in 5 is priceless.

I would just pass and underlead my A with a spade shift preference if they sit on 5, this way we can defeat them even if A is behind me. If they ruff 1st diamond, there is a good chance they are making slam, particularly in spade suit. I will not ignore all the good things that can happen and bid 6 just for winning 4 imps.

BBO P is strong as are opps. imps[/hv]

Mr Ace's arguments are persuasive: Pass = 10, Double = 8, 6 = 6.

I would have said 2NT at my first turn. Then I could leave the rest to partner.

As it stands, I pass, which I assume is forcing.

I will lead the DA, even though 2/3 of the time I expect it will get ruffed. If it does, it's as good a passive lead as any.

Pass is surely not forcing, it looks like the board belongs to opps. Forcing pass applies when we have forced to game on strength, not when we have made a game bid that could be taken as a sacrifice (or just as a "shot").

2NT initially? We are red/red and I have two high cards that are useful in defense but likely useless in offense. I have no high cards that are more useful in offense than in defence, unless one opp is void in diamonds. Whether this hand is strong enough for 2NT is a matter of style, but even if playing an aggresive style I wouldn't do it with such a bad O-D.

Hi,

6D is out, for all I know 5H goes down due to my 2 trump tricks

(depending where the Ace is), the Ace of Diamonds with me increases

the Chance that p has something outside Diamonds, increasing the Chance

that 5H goes down, and 6Dx - ??? may well be too expensive

I cant be sure that 5H goes down, hence X is out as well.

That leaves Pass.

With kind regard

Marlowe

Wrong question: 4S on previous round would imply something in hearts and spade shortage (no club fit jump) and partner could would be better placed than me to decide what to do.

Yes : now partner don't know spade situation ..(!)

I think the choice is between contre or 6 diamond.
