Precision for dummies

Recommended Posts

Originally I started out playing ACOL, but I would like to try a Precision system.

So far I know the following bids/system:

1 = 16+ (negative 1 response)

1 = 11-15, 4+

1 = 11-15, 5+

1 = 11-15, 5+

1NT = 12-15 balanced

2 = 11-15, 6+ or 5+ & 4+ M (2 asking bid)

2 = 11-15 with 4-4-1-4

I would like to explore a bit more precise continuations to make the system true to its name.

Do any of you know some bids/sequences I should learn or good books/sites on this topic?

Precision Today, by Berkowitz and Manley. Their opening bids are a little different:

1: 16+ HCP, artificial, Forcing. Responses: 1 neg, 1M or 2m positive (8+ HCP, 5+ card suit headed by 2 top honors), 1NT 8-13 balanced, 2NT 14+ balanced.

1: 11-15 HCP, 2+ , no better bid. Responses natural.

1 or 1: 11-15 HCP, 5+ card suit. Responses natural

1NT: 14-16 HCP balanced. Responses: as you like.

2: (11)12-15 HCP, 6+ , Responses: 2 asks, others natural.

2: 11(12)-15 HCP, 4=3=1=5, 3=4=1=5, 4=4=1=4 or 4=4=0=5. Responses: 2NT asks, others natural (simple responses are to play).

Another possibility is Barry Rigal's Precision in the 90's. Again, a slightly different system, but very well presented, and shows the kinds of questions you should be asking yourself when putting a system together.
