This one comes from yesterday's JEC match, first board!

You land in 5X after a slight missunderstanding, partner though you would have more for going to the 3 level on a missfit hand, and tried 3NT hoping to run his clubs if you had K doubleton or perhaps a heart stopper.

You were a bit puzzled on the partner´s bidding, who first seemed to have a weak hand with short diamonds (otherwise he would double 2) but then tried for game.

For better or worse you blast 5. To make things worse Garozzo quickly doubles you. How would you play on a low diamond lead? (RHO lets you win the 6)

Your link is screwed up. http://bridgegod.com/playprob.php?probid=256

[edit]

I played poorly to make thanks to friendly defense. I play to develop club winners. After ruffing the first round I played to 9, E won K and played his K. W overruffed with the trump A, and then played a heart, so I could ruff another club to hand, draw trumps, cross in spades and pitch my losers.

S assumption that n could have made a tox vs 2s fails

to take into consideration the many hands where N is

short (sometimes really really short) in diamonds. In

those cases there is a very VERY strong chance N has a

lot of clubs and will be loathe to leave diamonds in as

a final contract. I would have passed 2s as probably our

best shot at a positive score and kept 3d in reserve in

case 2s gets x. That aside N should have more strongly

considered S predicament and realized this would have been

taken into consideration and S had decent enough diamonds

to play opposite a singleton/void. I am not sure it was

reasonable for N to try for 3n since it was pretty much

impossible for you to have a heart stop a 1 loser dia suit

and a side entry w/o being able to bid 3d over 2h. I think

5d was a reasonable shot given game could make opposite

Axxx x Ax AKxxxx (unless your side would have upgraded such

a hand to a 1c bid)

We have gained a tempo with the trump opening lead the question

is how do we exploit it. If we continue trumps it becomes far

too easy for the opps to find a heart switch after they win the

A and most of our legitimate club holdings go down the drain due

to lack of entries. That means we take our best shot at making 5

right now and lead the club J to the A and ruff a club. If this works

we have gained the time we need to continue trump plays (they will

probably break 51 but that's life) and if they break 42 or better we

should quickly wrap up making 5d. If we fail to tackle clubs we can

pretty much count on down 2 or at worst down 3 so taking our only really

legitimate shot at making seems reasonable.

Thanks, I will try to change that

Your auction here doesn't have the double in it that's on the website. W has missed the boat by failing to find the right lead.

I simply ruffed a club low at trick 3 and then played trumps for 12 easy tricks, I'd have gone down a bunch to a 5-1 trump break or 4-1 clubs.
