Hmmm. I wonder if there isn't a a bit of double-dummy-itis in the bidding of these hands. It's fine to show spades and GF values but what is opener supposed to do if he lacks S support but has a suit unstopped? Gamble that overcaller has the other possibility?

In Modified SCAMP we'd encounter that problem earlier:

1 (2) P (3) . . . 16+ (Suction) GF with C length or neg (pass or correct)

P (P) 3 (P) . . . typically BALish min (no t/o X and no suit bid); 5+S and C length (and shortage or weakness in a red suit else TFR to spades then rebid 3N)

4

We play TFRs over two-level interference by the opponents but, even at the three level, they are only INV+. (Responder would start this way with KQxxxx and out, for example.) Responder could bid 3 as a TFR to S but would then be stuck if opener accepted (showing a min): he could assume overcaller had C and rebid 3N or . . . Double of 2 would be t/o of their single-suited option. Pass then strong action shows a GF hand with length in their single-suited option; with 5-3-4-1 (say) responder would start with a X then bid 3 over 3 or 3.

pass 1 (1)

1 1

1NT 2NT

3 4 (end)

pass = 0-8 or 15+

1 = 0-8 or 15+

1 = better than doubling, which could be taken as.. clubs!!

1 = nat 15-20 (with 0-8: PASS)

1 = nat 4-7 (with 15+: cue)

1NT, 2NT = nat

3 = just in case...

4 = and that's the case
