I would hope that if I'm playing a system wherein a 1NT response shows 12+ any shape, I have sufficiently discussed follow-ups over preempts with partner to have some "inside information" as to how various rebids will be understood.

Sure, everything is natural including double. Pass is forcing. 4NT would show 6 and 4 minor

This sort of method seems to work better when the opponents don't bid 4.

I'd bid 5. I have too much shape to consider defending 4, but the hearts aren't good enough for a pass-and-pull sequence.

I don't think pass and pull to 5 is stronger in this system. I pass because partner may have a game-forcing hand with one or both minors.

A direct 5 promises a good suit. A delayed one show some doubt about strain.

I think Phil's point about pass and pull is well made. We are limited to 15 hcp so we will rarely need the pass and pull distinction to be based on the sort of wide range standard bidders can hold.

I like the pass. I can readily bid 5 over 5m, or the remote possibility of 5. My initial reaction had been to pass and pull, but I had overlooked the limited nature of the opening bid. I do, as it happens, think that this hand is good enough to pass and pull to 5 in a standard method. If I were permitted but one call to end the auction, it would be 6, but fortunately I don't have to commit yet.

I hate choosing other since rarely does anyone vote for it

but there I felt strongly this hand could be bid to perfection

with pass followed by 4n (if p x) followed by 5h if p bid a minor.

We may miss a few 5 making 5 of a minor but the overall bidding will

almost always land us in our best contract with a perfectly informed

partner and maybe even allow us to get to 7 on occasion.

It seems to me that one of pass, double or 4NT should be a typical call with a 1633 hand or similar. I choose that. From the follow-ups it looks like that call is going to be pass. As an aside, would it not be better to play P-X inversion here? Now we can double with the 6331 hand and pass-pull with a side minor, or something like that.

Everything split nicely and 13 tricks could be taken in either hearts or clubs. However after my pass + 5 partner prefered to double 5 for +1100, he now admits he thinks that was a mistake. Won 7 anyway,
