A CTC deal

3rd seat would never get to open 1C

At my table the auction would start with a Frelling 2H Opening

2H = 4+ Hearts and (4+ Spades or 5+ Clubs)

Auction would proceed

2H - 3C [3C = relay]

3S - 4D [3S = Maximum with 5 Spades]

4D - 5C [4D/5C = cue bid]

6S

Not a roaring success for your method. You need to play 6HEARTS, not six spades. This allows you to win 10 major tricks, 1D, and a club ruff. Six spades the club ruff doesn't help, and you have only 11 tricks.

My auction would start simply with a 1H overcall. North hand could bid 2S (fit jump) but i don't like the spots that well in the suit, or it could start 2NT (four card support, light limit raise or better). After the fit jump, the slam in hearts is automatic. After 2NT, the slam will still be reached...

P P (1C) 1H

- 2N - 3D

- 3H - 3S (3H = min 2NT, 3S = slam try)

-----

You can come up with your own auction after this 3S bid, but once partner shows a) slam interest, and B) no club control... North with SK, HA, and stiff club will surely cooperate and 6 hearts will be reached.

The 2NT bid hear showing four card heart support and 2S being fit jump (and 2C being good defense, poor offense raise) can be read about in Robson/Segal's Partnership bidding at bridge.

Isn't the 5-loser hand too good to make a simple 1H overcall?

No. At least not for me. My doubles of 1C and 1D are shape specific (support for all unbid suits) or A GREAT ONE SUITED HAND. I will even overcall 1S on 5-4-3-1 hands and they open 1C. I will then reopen with a double if clubs come back to me.

Once again, I take most of this bidding appoach from Robson/Segal's book, and all I can say is it fits my "style".

RHO opened 1C 3rd seat. Can you bid it?

No, I can't!

To bid 6H I need (as South) to find out about the fifth spade. Unless North makes a fit-jump in spades (and I don't think he should as the suit is too weak), I will never be sure.

Interestinglyly, if you swap the spade Jack and spade 3, the slam becomes easy:

1H 2S (fit jump, 5 goodish spade, 4 hearts)

3D 4C (cue bids)

4NT 5C (RKB, 1 keycard)

6H (I can count 5 S, 5H, 1D, 1 club ruff)

Note that with ten clubs between them, I don't really expect to have the auction to myself. I would expect West to raise to 2 or 3 clubs on most hands, which makes bidding this low point count slam even harder.

Hi all,

I must admit, that I maybe had misses 6 Hearts too.

I must and will start with a X. I doubt, that "Bens" way is superior. In his way, a simple one Heart bid can show from 10 (Or 8?) to 28 HCPs. Seems to give away a lot. In the way, which is more common her, you have at most 18 HCPs, which still is a big gap, but you can handle it quite well. All hands with 19+ are bid with a X first.

(Disclaimer: I won`t say, that this is the one and only way to bid, I just prefer it...)

Anyway:

(1C) X (P) 2Club (both majors 8+)

pass 2 H (2 Club is forcing one round,

no need to jump)

3 Heart (minimum)

3 S 4 Club

4 D 4 S

4 NT 5 D

6 H

But at the table, I may had bid just 3 Spade with the responders hand instead of 2 Club.

Or a lazy 4 Heart with the strong hand. So no complaints for a pd missing this slam.

Kind Regards

Roland

Well, thanks so much for crediting the overcall on this hand as being "ben's" way. But once again, as I pointed out above, I take my competitive bidding right out of Robson and Segal's book "Partnership Bidding at Bridge, The Contested Auction" so it is hardly fair to characterize it strictly as Bens way. And with any true game forcing hand, I don't simply overcall, as that would be silly.... so with 28 hcp I will not bid 1H. Also with a monster balance hand too good for 1NT I will double and rebid NT. My "I will not double with 1C or 1D without the correct shape" or with a one suited great hand (what R/S calls a GOSH hand "Good One Suited Hand") however still applies to hands like this. As I said, this has worked well for my style since adopting it.

Eric is right, of course, this is not a great hand to make a fit jump to 2S on... a situation I point out myself when I said the spots were not good in that suit for a fit jump.

RHO opened 1C 3rd seat. Can you bid it?

I'd have doubled (too strong for 1h, bad shape for Michs)

p p 1c x

p 1s p 2h

p 4c p 4d

p 4s p 4n

p 5c p 6h

2h = strong and 5+ cards (intending to bid 4s next,maybe)

4c = SPL with 4 h support (and 4+spades)

4d = Cue

4s = Cue

4n = RKCB

5c = 1/4

6h = well....

Seems to be a likely action.... The risky issue here is that either player can get "nervous" and blast to 4M.
