diana_eva
Your opps arrived in what appears to be a thin game, at IMPs vul. Lead was ♥K. Declarer won the Ace in dummy and it went K-A-8-2. Now ♦6 from dummy. [hv=pc=n&n=ST42HA96543D6CA42&e=SAJ9HJ8DAQT9CJT73&d=e&v=b&a=1D1SD2D(fit%208+)P2N3D4SPPP&p=HKHAH8H2D6]399|300[/hv] How do you plan to set this? (I managed to find a way to let them make, but I thought my logic was good - curious to find out where I went wrong)
SteveMoe
Win ♦A and try for the surround play in trumps? ♠J...
srw103
I'd play my partner for 5card support and opener for K 3rd in ♦, so I see no point in blowing a trump trick on a ruff I cannot prevent. Hard to picture a 2NT call without the remaining 3 Ks and one or likely both queens. However partner may still have ♣Qx(x) or ♣xx and ♠Qx, in which case there will be 3 late club and trump losers. I take A♦ and continue passive J♥.
hotShot
My Impression is that S wants to ruff 2 ♦ in dummy. I want at least on of these tricks, so I take ♦A draw trump with ♠A and follow with ♠9. Now I expect our side to get another ♦ trick and another trick in ♥.
kuhchung
ace and a trump, if declarer is KQxxx x Kxx Kxxx he'll come to 4 spade tricks, 1 heart, 1 diamond, 1 ruff, 2 clubs for 9 tricks, losing 2C 1D 1S in the ending. If we exit HJ, declarer ruffs in hand, DK (club pitch), D ruff, CA CK C ruff, spade off dummy, and I think we get 2S 1C. I can't really come up with a hand for declarer that would bid 2N, but if declarer has the CQ as well then I don't see a beat so whatever
diana_eva
Heh forgot about this one. I also thought the most urgent thing to do in defense was stop the dummy ruffs. However a club back was better with my trump holding. Here's the full hand: [hv=pc=n&s=SKQ8763H2DKJ82CQ8&w=S5HKQT7D7543CK965&n=ST42HA96543D6CA42&e=SAJ9HJ8DAQT9CJT73&d=e&v=b&a=1D1SD2D(fit%208+)P2N3D4SPPP]399|300[/hv]
Fluffy
Drawing 2 trumps leaves declarer with only 9 tricks, same as if he had 5 spades and ♣K, looks like the correct defence to me.
