2nd seat R/R, open vs. pre-empt

Recommended Posts

No, this is not a one bid. It is a preempt.

I would feel more comfortable than most in opening it 3 with my regular partner, as we have an unusual agreement that a 3 of a minor opening bid in 1st and 2nd seat promises AQ or AK of the suit or better. I could certainly see why some might have problems opening this 3, but red vs. white it should not be a problem. I would open the same 3 white vs. red, which I am sure is something that a lot of players would not do on this hand.

You might get more dissenting opinions if the 3-3 in the other suits were in the majors.

I understand 3 but would open 1, I feel missing 3N is too likely opposite something like Axxxx, Axx, xxx, Jx where 5 is -1.

It is MP

Also it is OK to preempt with hands that looks like a perfect max preempt sometimes. Especially in red and second seat. Yes you may miss a game or even a slam vs some clicking hands, but the problem is you will reach much more games or slams that will fail too, which is not profitable enough to take the risk at MP.

This is a comfortable 1 opener for us, 9 HCP, with the 2 tens below higher honours and no points in suits shorter than 3 we'd adjust this to a rule of 20 10 count and partner wouldn't expect any more, I'd be much more inclined to open this at the 3 level first or 3rd, odds are just about on partner having a decent hand with RHO's pass (whose average will be less than our 9).

You seem to focus on your system and looking at the position in a vacuum imo. I can't believe you easily ignore the fact that the number of major suit cards in your hand combined = 3 http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

Does it ring some bells ?

Of course it does, partner probably has quite a lot of them, and I'd much rather he took me for some defence than not. Comparing my hand to the KQJ10xxx and out it could easily be, I have an awful lot more defence than that, A109x, Axxx, x, K9xx I want partner to hit 4 and possibly 3, this won't happen if I open 3.

I agree that in 2/1 this is not a good 1, I missed that in the OP.

While I would open 3 most of the time too 1 at mp's is not off the wall at all.

With these majors they may well be coming in anyway and partner is unlikely to be able to smash them, missed games etc. It's a swing action that I wouldn't do at imps but it's more fun to bid 3 or 4 times in an auction than once.

It certainly is strong enough for a 1 bid, offensively and defensively, but I would open 3. It has good preemptive value and still has decent chances of getting us to a making game when one exists. Partner will expect a good suit second seat red. I will raise 3 to 4 and bid 3NT over 3.
