I am playing 2/1 with a random. I show my spades and he shows a second suit. I immediately think 5 but then think why jump that high when 3N could easily make if he has a stopper. He surprised me by passing. We make with 2 overs.

Did I do wrong in merely supporting his 2nd suit? Should I have invited to game with 4?

3 shows an invitational hand in most standard systems. Your hand should force to game by bidding 2 -- hopefully you'll have room to bid 3 over partner's response. Note that aside from 3n and 5, 4 is also a very possible contract, maybe even opposite a doubleton.

I like slam opposite as little as X XX AKXXX KXXXX, and might try a 3H splinter over 2C. Even the King of Spades might be unnecessary. Anyway, we could land in 3NT after that 3H Splinter if Partner chooses to bid it right there knowing full-well what he is facing in Dummy.

I cannot stress enough, the importance of not making a bid that PD can pass below game when you have a game force! The first thing east should be thinking about here when she sees PD open the bidding is that the pair must reach game.

NEVER MAKE A BID THAT PD CAN PASS BELOW GAME WHEN YOU HAVE A GF HAND !!

3C is just inv.

You can either bid 2H, FSF, looking for a spade fit, or 4H, a splinter.

With kind regards

Marlowe

PS: The single jump in the 4th suit is dangerous, at least undiscussed,

some play it as gf with 5-5, others as inv. with 55, I dont think, the later

is playable, but that is just my opinion.
