It's IMP scoring and no one is vulnerable.

You've made it to 4, after no opposition bidding.

West leads a trump, the 2. What's your plan for ten tricks?

The trump lead means that you won't have enough tricks to play for a cross ruff.

No choice but to go after the hearts

The auction matters - I need to know what West knew when he led a low trump. On the assumption that North opened 1, West is either short in hearts or has them well held himself. Since I probably can't make it in the former case, I will play West for QTxx or similar. I will need more luck than that - I need trumps to be 3-3 in most scenarios. So:

Trick 1 - K, assuming that holds ...

trick 2 -

How things go from there is up to the defence. If they win and play trump trump, I will go with my original read and take the heart finesse. This may lead to an overtrick or down two.

If they continues diamonds, I need to be careful, but essentially I can always get home if my read is correct.

In response to PhilKing, here's the full auction. 3 was Fourth Suit Forcing.

I think by the end we've both shown our full shape - North has shown exactly 3514 (or maybe has a 5th Club) and South exactly 4234 with a poor Diamond stop.

If you play the K on the first trick it does hold.

I play for spade 3-3, clubs 3-2 and heart 4-2 so i suppose to have 9 triks 3 spade, 2 heart, 4 clubs, i need only 1 trick, so i play K and A of heart and heart and i discard a daimod. Now the defence can play daimod and daimond and i cut in dummy my 10 tricks, or play spade and i cut another heart.

They just play a fourth round of hearts, tapping the long hand, whilst the other defender pitches clubs. You are at least two off now, I think.

The lead is usually the best defence.

Philkings line seems reasonable.

Gib shows you can make against some 4-2 major breaks. e.g.

You have all the top spades bar the ace so you lose nothing by playing for the diamond ruff. Should be 3 spade tricks, 2 hearts, 4 clubs and the !d ruff to make 10

Opp may not let you take a Diam ruff .

[A and another ... in with for a possible 3rd lead ] .

Except you won't get your D ruff.

But he has indadvertantly kept himself in the game - when the defence clear trumps, he will have to resort to plan B.

A at trick two keeps us on the tightrope, and we have a (potentially winning) counter whatever they do next.

Here's the full deal:

[hv=pc=n&s=sjt98hk7dq82cq863&w=s52ht52dkj95cjt95&n=skq6haj643d4cak74&e=sa743hq98dat763c2&d=w&v=0&b=8&a=p1hp1sp2cp3cp3dp3hp3sp3np4sppp]399|300[/hv]

West lead the 2.

As you can see, trumps are 4-2, Clubs are 4-1, and the Heart finesse is offisde (but they are 3-3).

Gib warns us that prospects are bleak, especialy on a lead, unless RHO makes the mistake of playing A.
