Drury / Reverse Drury

Recommended Posts

BBO members have revealed futuristic treatments integral to Barry Crane's system (e.g. Light opening bids and Drury in all seats). It's surprising that such innovations didn't cause more of a stir at the time. Were they properly disclosed?

Oh, I see that I got it wrong. Druryx4 was once OK and then removed from the general chart. Does anyone know why?

Because allowing in 1st 2nd seat was an invitation to psych with Drury being used as a psychic controller.

ACBL doesn't like psychic controller bids

How is it any more a psych control opposite a first-seat opener than it is opposite a third-seat opener?

This is why it is relatively recently that the EBU permitted Drury. But they didn't restrict which seats you could play it in. It seems on the surface that 3rd and 4th seats would be the worst ones from this perspective. But whatever.

Yes, most events use the General Convention Chart. Some upper level events use higher level charts, primarily unrestricted level games at NABCs, and a few others.

Honestly I feel like most events I play in these days are mid-chart. This includes GNT, NAP, bracket one or two KOs, strati-flighted swiss teams, various national pairs and team events, etc. In general if you stick to the highest flight things are mid-chart, although this won't hold for smallish events with a lot of weaker players in the field (i.e. stratified open pairs).

Except the NABC+ Fast Pairs. :)

Light openings (within reason) are not psychs. So Drury is not a psychic control.

I do understand why some might look at Drury in that manner. But you have to be using a bid intended to deal with a psychic bid for that bid to be a psychic control.

I do not think that intention has anything to do with it. If it looks like a duck etc. And I do think that a "light" opening such as 1 on xxx, x, Qxx, K109xxx is in fact a psych.

The psychic control thing is not as clear-cut as people make it out to be. I mean, Stayman is a psychic control because of a lot of hands which are worth game or more bid 2 over 1NT, giving opener a chance to pass if he psyched the opening? This seems extreme, but it's the same case people make with Drury.

To really be a psychic control, it's not enough that partner didn't immediately blast the maximum contract which should make opposite a non-psych. People don't really bid this way any more (if they ever did) and it risks missing a slam in many cases. You need a call that seems illogical opposite what partner supposedly showed (for example letting partner out in a partial when holding an obvious game force).

I think in ACBL land a 2c psyche is forbotten.

Perhaps comments could be assumed not to apply in places where a method is illegal. Then people could be saved the trouble of writing irrelevant posts like this.

Several of us were having a conversation about psyche controls in ABCL and the prohibition against 1st and 2nd seat Drury there. Admittedly somewhat a hijack of the initial post, but this one comment was certainly in line with the side conversation being held.
