IMP scoring. What's your call? What if you have one more small C and one fewer a) small D, b) small S?

Assume no special agreements (though if people have simple recommended defences to a Polish C, I'd be interested to hear them).

[eta] tooltip is obscuring some of the description. It's 12-14 bal with no 4cM, else 15+ with Cs, else 18+ any shape.

Treat as weak NT since that's the most common, and abuse the ability to overcall at the 1-level? :) So here you could X.

Alternatively treat as a short club-type thing, so 1NT (and 2C overcall with the extra club, if you play natural over short clubs).

Here IMO, Pass = 10, Double = 9, 1 = 7, 1 = 6.

A possible basis for a simple defence to Polish 1 is:

  • Pass (hoping to double later) = Most 4441s..
  • Double = BAL 12-15 HCP or 19+ (A "Multi" double)
  • 1NT = BAL 16-18.
  • 1/1/!/2 = NAT 5+HCP 5+ cards.
  • 2/2 = NAT Weak 6+ cards.
  • 2 = ART 5+ and 5+ other.(then 2 = P/C, 2NT = constructive relay).
  • 2NT = ART 5+ and 5+ minor.
  • 3 = NAT 5+ and 5+ .

Standard way in Poland is to play dbl as t/o (so 3-3 majors guaranteed) and 2C as natural.

This means this hand is a pass.

This is regardless if you play:

Generally a good approach against polish club is to pass with strong defensively oriented hands.

Which was once very popular way but felt out of fashion nowadays (people overcall 1NT with most hands which qualify) but I think it was very decent idea. Especially if you can come up with good use for 1NT and make the dbl more major oriented than standard one.

This hand is very comfortable pass because it's almost always going to be:

1C p 1D p

1H and here you have perfect t/o double to hearts.

Pass is pretty clear (1NT shouldn't be natural over a Polish 1 ayway).

The question is what do do if it continues 1*-1*. Now it would be nice if double was t/o of hearts but I am afraid it isn't. It probably shows a balanced 16+. I suppose this hand is close enough to that, although it is a bit scary if partner leaves it in.
