Cyberyeti
Stayman, if I bid 3N, partner invariably has xxx, AKxx, AQxx, Kx (or has 5 hearts, but you might not open that 1N).

ggwhiz
I used to play 1nt - 3♠ typically showed a 1-3-(5-4,4-5) game force which might survive on a hand like this but without it blasting 3nt is a one way ticket to the partnership desk. Even if it works.
Cyberyeti
Why on earth not? There are some people in this world who won't open 1N with 5M, I'm not one of them, but there seem to be plenty around, that debate seems to be done pretty regularly on these boards. What on earth does playing 1NT with 5 card Ms have to do with bidding stayman on this hand?
Cyberyeti
What on earth does playing 1NT with 5 card Ms have to do with bidding stayman on this hand? Because I definitely want to be in 4♥ via Stayman if there's any danger partner has 5 of them, 3N can be a monumentally stupid place to play, xxx, AKQxx, Ax, Kxx for example, going off in 3N when I can make 6♥. Antrax
Alright, this is what I thought. About a quarter of the people who've played the hand on BBO just blasted 3NT and were rewarded (4♥ goes 2 off, 3NT makes on the nose) and I was wondering if there's some principle here I'm missing. It's not even hand-hogging as GIB would play either final contract.

But i play 3♦ 3♥ 3♠ bids splinter, so that is what i would bid in my prefered system. I am not sure if this would help pd to bid 3 NT and ignore our 4-4 ♥ fit since i don't know the other hand. Antrax
N has ♠KQxx and four lousy hearts, so you'd end up in 3NT after a spade splinter.
the hog
no, if pd only has kqxx of s, you would still be in 4H
MrAce
no, if pd only has kqxx of s, you would still be in 4H He did not say only KQxx ♠ but also 4 lousy hearts. FYI when they did not bid it, xxxx vs x or xxx vs xx is good enough to play 3 NT if you have to, It maybe 4-4, or it maybe 5-3 and the guy with 3 card maybe on lead, or they may block it, or we may go down in 3 NT. People go down sometimes in their game contracts http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif Anyway, pd seems to have much better than xxxx. ggwhiz
I hereby request that all posters mention that it is a GIB hand so I can ignore it as having nothing to do with the game I know.
