MrAce
xx Jx AKJ9xxx Kx, 4th in hand at teams, NV vs V. (1S) - P - (4S) - ? (Opps are 4cd M / weak NT). To me yes, at this vulnerability. White vs Red, a very well 7 card suit texture, makes the risk/gain ratio in favor of bidding despite the 2-2-2 side shape. It is also consistent with opponents bidding 4♠ vulnerable. I am aware that some may argue that pd can take us too serious. I disagree, pd is also capable of seeing the colors and that i am bidding under pressure. Of course we may construct hands where pd has a legit hand to get excited, or that 5♦ bid was wrong on this hand, but nothing is perfect especially when you are forced to bid or pass at 5 level. To me they bid and raised on red is a strong hint besides me holding a 7 card good suit and being white. It may even be a good lead director, if they decide to not sell the auction. Who knows ? Most people i read in forums are focused on lead directors that are targeting the killing leads. Sometimes avoiding pd to make a fatal (for us) lead is good enough. the hog
No it is definitely NOT clear; it is worth serious consideration. Bidding could go for a number and your distribution is foul. That said, I would bid 5H here, but would not be surprised to see it go awry.
nige1
xx Jx AKJ9xxx Kx, 4th in hand at teams, NV vs V.(1S) - P - (4S) - ?(Opps are 4cd M / weak NT). IMO 5♥ = 10, Pass = 7, Double = 4Agree with MrAce and theHog. Great that they agree (to some extent) with each other :)
barmar
5♥? Bidding a 2-card suit? I've added the hand diagram, this goes to show why they're better than writing the hand in text.
ggwhiz
I agree that it's clear to bid and not at all clear that you may regret it.

aguahombre
I think the decision is clear to bid 5♦ unless we know something else...like it is a Precision pair, whose 4S raise might be on 3-card support with the nuts. Even then, 5 ♦ should be considered; but it would be close.

Zelandakh
Before doing anything I will ask what the 4♠ response means - many in the Acol Club use this as their strong raise!
rfedrick
Before doing anything I will ask what the 4♠ response means - many in the Acol Club use this as their strong raise! 4S is normal, something like a 4-8 count with lots of shape (this is from a strong teams match, it's not BBO). mcphee
I do not feel this is so clear at all. Partner holding short S failed to bid which suggests to me my LHO has a good hand and that does not make my K of C look so good at this moment and becomes a suspect value. Bidding even though the colors are favorable may not work out. We could easily go for 800 and it might be 1100 on a bad day. I will not haggle with the 5D bidders, but I think bidding here is not a favorite to work well, mark me down for pass.

rfedrick
Thanks for the comments.Like the majority here, I bid 5D, with some misgivings. This went for 1100 (against 650) when LHO turned up with a strong NT (including Qxx of diamonds) and partner contributed a distinctly unhelpful Qx Q9xx xx xxxxx.
