I have been reading for decades how we should all be playing

negative doubles through 7s and before us we finally have a

prime example of how effective such a strategy can be. So if

my p and I are playing playing neg x thru at least 6s I have

a perfect x here yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

and I will not have to worry about what to do with this dilemma

again for another 15 years or so.

 

Practically speaking I think it is highly preferable for x

here to mean 1 probable defensive trick and expecting the opening

bidder to produce another (that's right ultra light openers

beware). Pass merely means I expect to not supply even 1 defensive

trick and it is definitely not forcing since I would pass with

xx xxxx xxx xxxx and xx QJx QJxx xxxx though you might be able to

convince me to x with the second hand.

 

On this hand I x and hope against hope we cannot make something at

the 7 level (remember 7s is still available for a sac) so the most we

are missing out (assuming we set it) is 300 for setting 7 instead of 6

not horrific by any means but if we blow an 800 set in favor of going

down in 7 ouchies-----------------------------------------------------

You may imagine you're playing high-stake poker but, at teams, unless RHO is a John Collings clone, his bid is unlikely to be a flight of fancy because (on a different hand) he won't relish explaining to team-mates why he conceded 200 or 500 in 6♠X when East made 4♠ in the other room with no profitable sacrifice for NS. IMO You should trust him to be within a trick of 6♠. Vulnerable, he might have 12 ♠ headed by the A. Or you may have a defensive accident. Anyway, Granny says "When in doubt bid one more."[/hv]

While the card might say "negative doubles through 7♠", there's virtually zero chance of partner pulling the double given our actual hand (partner is missing two aces and a bunch of other stuff).

 

I would just gamble and take the push. They may well save.

If you bid 7♦, you just got overruffed on the opening spade lead. Also, I'd like to have you as a wrestling partner, because you're extremely easy to push around.

If you double, preempter has AQJ-twelfth and out: -1660, or -1860 if you miscount on the pseudosqueeze :-) Or maybe even AQJ-tenth (as I saw last tournament), and 7 makes, and 6♠ goes for 500.

 

Having said that, I'm doubling "for takeout", quite certain that it's not likely to be taken out.
