I don't really enjoy opening 3 bids with a suit like this, and in fact would prefer 1S if I felt forced to open. Will I be happy if partner bids 3N, I suppose you have to be if you choose 3S. For me I can in most cases get the chance to bid later with heaps more information so I vote pass as I am very willing to wait and hear. But, I don't remember partner ever bidding a successful 3NT over my opening 3S bid, and if she did she would probably not be expecting spade tricks which she might not be able to reach to cash. Lovera Posted October 29, 2014 Report Share Posted October 29, 2014 I have ruled myself in this way (so my partner knows how much strong is my preempt): with an hand to barrage (hand type 7-2-2-2 or so) i apply Courtney losers that in this case are 6 then 7 winners + vulnerability penalty(=rule of 2 and 3) for level determination that i correct in (more exact) rule of 1(vul vs not vul), 2( pair vul), 3(not vul vs vul) [in Courtney losers for barrage i don't consider winner Queen being control of 3th round subject ruff]. Whether it's legal to agree to open 1♠ on such hands is an interesting but rather academic question - since even where such rules obtain, they're rarely enforced. But with a random CHO, no decent methods, and playing to maximize results for the current hand, 4♠. I can even be specific about 'decent methods' for this case: You have decent methods for this purpose if you have a way of bidding RKCB in spades after partner shows 15-17 balanced. gszes Posted October 30, 2014 Report Share Posted October 30, 2014 I guess its just more fun to preempt than PASS rho passed so they average around 5.5 hcp we have 7 that means there are 27.5 hcp left for the other two and on average at around 14 each withpartners 14 getting a large 60% positional advantage means this hand has a very strong chance of our side making game (ON AVERAGE). It would seem like a poor idea to mess around with precious bidding spacewhen we might need it all to arrive at not only the right level but proper strain. BTW the opps on average rate at most a part score so preemption heremesses with our bidding and doesn't hurt the opps much at all since they arenot going to sacrifice anyway.
