PeterAlan
4♠, assuming partner is showing both majors. Ideally I'd like a bit more information on (a) how we use X in this sequence, and (b) opponents' pre-empt style, but without that this is what I'd choose. It should have good chances, and I see no reason to suppose we're taking 500 from 3♦X.
broze
3♠. Unless p's takeout doubles are VERY sound (and whose are these days) 3♠ should be enough. If p has extra shape or values he will be aggressive to raise to four. No reason to suspect we are getting rich in 3Dx (but it would be a good shot at MP I think); 3N is a total gamble and could easily miss 4S. ArtK78
If the minors were reversed I would probably bid 4♠. As it is, I think that 3♠ is enough. 3NT may be the winning call, but if you have to let RHO on lead at some point 3NT could very well have no play. the hog
3S. Close to 4.
jallerton
Thanks for the replies. 4♠ was selected at the table. This was not a success when partner had also stretched to double on Jxx KQ8xx x AQxx. I was asked to assign the blame, but I thought that Advancer's problem was quite interesting.
