Responding to t/o double of 3D


What's your call after partner doubles 3D?

4, assuming partner is showing both majors. Ideally I'd like a bit more information on (a) how we use X in this sequence, and (b) opponents' pre-empt style, but without that this is what I'd choose. It should have good chances, and I see no reason to suppose we're taking 500 from 3X.

3. Unless p's takeout doubles are VERY sound (and whose are these days) 3 should be enough. If p has extra shape or values he will be aggressive to raise to four. No reason to suspect we are getting rich in 3Dx (but it would be a good shot at MP I think); 3N is a total gamble and could easily miss 4S.

If the minors were reversed I would probably bid 4. As it is, I think that 3 is enough.

 

3NT may be the winning call, but if you have to let RHO on lead at some point 3NT could very well have no play.
