8421 means ace=8, king=4, queen=2, jack=1. So the answer is nine.

Thank you very much.

You still need to remember that GIB replies with 6 or more total points, not necessarily any number of HCP. North has only 5 total points on this hand, because you don't count for both J and doubleton.

helene_t's answer is 9 count,however you said GIB replies with 6 plus total points,why pass? You seem to be very contradiction.

what's 8421? how many total points is one Ace plus one Jack in 8421?

The answer is the same as when you asked that question last month.

Robot answered 3 to show "3+8421hcp in C",I don't know its exact meanings,who can tell me? thanks.

A = 8, K = 4, Q = 2, J = 1.

So 3+ means at least QJ in the suit.

As I understand it, this is how GIB "knows" to evaluate honor strength -- e.g. when cuebidding it doesn't think of Ace vs. no Ace in a suit, it thinks of 8+ (Ace) or 7- (no ace).

No. Please pay attention. GIB has several different ways of counting:

  1. High card points (HCP). A=4, K=3, Q=2, J=1. Just like every beginner book tells you.
  2. Total points. HCP + distribution (1 for doubleton, 2 for singleton, 3 for void, without double-counting for shortness with honors). This is what GIB usually uses (except for NT bids) to determine whether to bid and how high.
  3. 8421 points. A=8, K=4, Q=2, J=1, and always in conjunction with a specific suit. This is used for cue-bidding sequences, so you know what honors GIB has in which suits.
  4. Relay points. A=3, K=2, Q=1, J=1. Also generally used in slam-seeking auctions, but not really predictably.

Editted to include relay points, which I originally omitted.
