Voting System

Many prominent Forum participants upvote the post, not the poster...
Of course that is the whole point. And I think that all but a very few posters do, in fact, do it this way...
Do you really? I doubt this. I upvote posts I like even when I strongly disagree with everything else the person has posted...

It appears to me that you're agreeing with agua and billw on this approach, although you say you doubt it.

Agreeing with aqua, disagreeing with billw.

Er, but I was also agreeing with aqua. I guess I wasn't clear about that.

I also randomly upvote posts when I am trying to reply. I suspect that a lot of us do this.

For clarity, I agree, and I also upvote based on the post content, not based on who the poster is.

On my screen, the upvote button is just above the multiquote button, with the reply button to the left. It is distinct enough that I don't think I have ever inadvertently upvoted. Maybe the display on other devices (phones, tablets) is more prone to this.

Time to close this with some conclusions:

There are a few constructive ideas:

hrothgar: use Daily Kos-system... what is it ?

Antrax: best is NO rules

Vampyr: strange to upvote questions

Zelandakh: to enable people who just want to browse threads quickly to find the most important responses quickly.

Zelandakh: There is nothing wrong with upvoting an interesting OP

bilw: If you genuinely like the post, then voting it up is normal

mike777: questions more interesting than the answers

mike777: My way to say thank you for posting such a thoughtful, interesting question.

aguahombre: upvote the post, not the poster

aguahombre: an expression of agreement

aguahombre: it valuable to see who upvotes a particular idea

Vampyr: I upvote posts I like

Lot of Hijacking attempts:

diana_eve - a Yellow ! : about my birthday

GreenMan: an argument with hrothgar

Zelandakh: reponding to not to the point contri by JLogic

.... and a lot more

And I also want ot mention two unfriendly contributions:

JLOGIC: a Pro

Csaba

Thanks you all,

but sorry, not enough input to start something usefull.

That is why I will continue to make sure that the upvote system reflects my vision.

Be The with you all,

except JLOGIC and Csaba :)

one downvote for them.

PS: can I get your upvotes please.

Lot of Hijacking attempts:

Vampyr: downvotes back

etc.

I don't think this was at all an attempt to hijack the thread. Any reasonable voting system should include both plus and minus votes; otherwise, the "love it or hate it" type of response will always get many upvotes without the downvotes that would correctly identify it as a double-edged sword.

Right,

I will correct.

Ideally, yes. Unfortunately it only takes a few abusers to sabotage the system and this happened with downvotes.

Perhaps if we had tighter limits on votes. Maybe 5 upvotes and 2 downvotes per day.

Also certain posters seem to try to "downvote" a post in a thread by upvoting all the others.

What would be really interesting would be that downvotes required a comment explaining why. (And could then be subject to cancellation by mods.)

Of course a neutral rating will not represent this type of post, but I suppose there is no way to change to number of upvotes and number of downvotes instead of a single rating. I quite like the idea of low limits on votes.

To be honest, I'm not sure what problem we're trying to fix. Let's say you all have a million bajillion rep and I have zero. What is the damage?

The forum software can filter by score, but it does so in increments of 10. I've rarely seen a post with rep 10, and when I have, it's usually a really good zinger.

If you really want more Bridge-worthy posts to stand out, just have stars on the forums as well. It's the same username in any case.

I would find it mildly amusing if you had to give a written appraisal of say at least 10 words before you upvoted. Heart symbols would NOT count. I freely admit to giving PVWM (plus votes without merit) more often than most other posters, so I would be a net loser under this new rule, but it would still be a very funny situation.

Can you please stop upvoting me? Since I have started posting again you have upvoted me like 40 times just leave me alone, thanks.

Looks like she actually stopped voting for you, that was the last day.

But you were only her second favorite in November, RSClyde got 3 more upvotes than you.

Of course, many of us upvote posts simply to say "I agree with this" or "that's what I was going to say", etc.

We've received another complaint about your excessive, random upvoting. You said a month ago that you would stop upvoting. But apparently you have been hitting the upvote limit almost every day:

+------------+---------+ | date | upvotes | +------------+---------+ | 2013-12-26 | 20 | | 2013-12-25 | 20 | | 2013-12-24 | 12 | | 2013-12-23 | 4 | | 2013-12-22 | 20 | | 2013-12-21 | 20 | | 2013-12-20 | 20 | | 2013-12-19 | 20 | | 2013-12-17 | 20 | | 2013-12-16 | 20 | | 2013-12-08 | 20 | | 2013-12-06 | 20 | | 2013-12-05 | 20 | | 2013-12-02 | 2 | | 2013-12-01 | 18 | | 2013-11-30 | 20 | | 2013-11-29 | 20 |

Do I have to disable your voting privilege to get you to keep your promise?

UNQOUTE

IfI promised something, it was to wait for the outcome about of thisthreat, hoping on the existence of general consensus, on what Avoting system should look like.

AndI already said, as long as there are no guidelines for up ordown-voting, I would like that the results of the voting systemreflect my opinions. Isn't that basic for a Voting System.

So I see no reason why I should not use the Voting system...

Am I less than the other members ?

Anyway,who complaint ?

I never got a direct remark from any other member. "One" other complaint.... The first one, and the only one, I know of was by Inquiry !

As I do not want to provoke the execution of Barmar's threat, I will do no up-votes. After all, it is Christmas Time.

I am awaiting all your reactions to what I consider an act of intellectual censorship by Barmar.

Be The with you all and with the Voting System.

Yes, and in these cases upvoting is better than just posting that you agree, if you have nothing to add. Although of course sometimes we are forced to do this when the post is by a yellow.
