He leads the ♦KWest must keep two spades or declarer will lead a low spade next and win ♠K, ♥AK, ♦K, so he discards a heart.North follows suit and east must keep two spades or declarer will lead the ♠K next, smothering the queen, and wins ♠T, ♥AK, ♦K, so east discards a heart. Now declarer plays ♥AK, establishing the ♥3. bgm
Vice squeeze?
ahydra
Looks like it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vice_squeeze Fun squeeze though. Wonder if you'd be able to read it at the table until you've cashed the DK. ahydra
Fluffy
I am a bit tired, isn't the third example on the wikipedia wrong?
gszes
note that the squeeze operates no matter which hand wins the dia trick. This position is a GUARD squeeze with the only difference being thespade QJ are in a finesseable position vs behind. I admit I do not recall seeing the term "vice squeeze" before this. The fact that the squeeze works does not automatically mean you shouldtry to play for it because lho might easily be able to pitch a spade from Qx orJx and keep hearts covered and you make six by simply leading a heart to dummy and playing rho for the spade A. I will admit it is easier to get ones name in printby pulling off the squeeze vs the more plebian spade toward the K play (thoughI would consider the squeeze anti percentage unless I had a strong reason forsuspecting lho had the spade A)
Lord Molyb
I am a bit tired, isn't the third example on the wikipedia wrong?the four card ending one? West lets go of a heart on the ♠5 or the ♦K establishes the 8, discard a diamond from dummy, now a heart to the king establishes the ten. South to make 3 of the last 4 tricks[/hv]To make it a vice squeeze ("where one defender holds cards of equivalent rank which split the declarer's pair of cards in front of him, where his partner has a winner in the suit") you need to change the diagram slightly: [hv=pc=n&s=sah2dcq9&w=shaqdck8&n=shdca432&e=shkjdcjt]399|300[/hv] Rainer Herrmann

Antrax
Rainer, in your diagram, can't the defense prevail if W pitches ♥A and E ♥J? Or am I misunderstanding the position?
Lord Molyb
I think this is a vice squeeze that gains TWO tricks.[hv=pc=n&s=sha32d9ck4&w=shjtdtcq98&n=sahq9dca62&e=s7hk74dcjt]399|300[/hv]Notrump. North leads the ♠A, south discards a heart, west must throw a heart. ♥Q is run, east covers the king, south wins the ace and leads to the ♥9. West is squeezed in the minors. edit: apparently this isn't a vice squeeze according to a few posts above me? Also fixed diagram, west could throw a club and win a red-suit trick eventually
