On this hand, the diamonds broke 1-6. When it comes time to guess other suits, you have to play East (with the stiff diamond) as having the longer holding. Freak shapes like 5-5 or more are relatively rare -- usually once someone shows up with a singleton he won't have another singleton or doubleton.

 

Here, after ruffing the third diamond high, you played for spades 2-2 (giving East both a singleton and a doubleton). That didn't work out. Then you played for him to have ♣Kx, for which he would have to be 3=7=1=2. The actual distribution is just much more likely than this.

On the third diamond, you should discard your losing heart. It's a trick you are going to lose anyway, so there is no reason to risk losing a trump trick (either by getting overruffed, or by ruffing high and later losing a trick to the ♠J).
