GIB doesn't adjust for vulnerability when preempting so you know it has the ♦A and a major card or more. I was planning to post this hand in GIB robot discussion to complain about the bidding system, where X is takeout, 4♦ and 5♦ show two-suited hands with 4 and 3- losers respectively, 3NT is capped at 22 HCP and 4NT is undefined, but then I realized my own system has no real answer here, either. So, what do you do with this hand? I realize you normally don't tailor your system to these extreme situations, I just wonder which general agreements might work here.As a bonus question, what if you also held the ♠A? nigel_k Posted October 30, 2013 Report Share Posted October 30, 2013 I would double with the first hand. If partner can only bid three of a major, 3NT is enough. Otherwise I will bid slam. If he still jumps, you know, ..., I guess I bid 6NT. Would be a lot harder, if you swap diamonds with spades, and you face a 3S preempt. HighLow21 Posted November 2, 2013 Report Share Posted November 2, 2013 Hand 1: 3NT. Less than 22 HCP in my book because of the short secondary honors in ♦ and ♠. Hand 2: TOUGH. It depends on how lucky i'm feeling. Partner needs specific cards for a slam to be on in most cases. I would guess it no better than 50/50 to make slam on average. I'd probably double then go 4♥ if partner bids them or 3NT if not. And I'd grit my teeth if he showed up with something like xxxx♠ K9xxx♥ xxxx♣.
