Visual alert

Recommended Posts

I find the sounds in BBO quite annoying, so i turn them off. Often when I'm dummy (or when waiting for a table to fill, or waiting for a new round in a tournament to start etc) I minimize the BBO window and surf the net or do something else only to find that I miss the start of a new hand.

Is it possible to implement some kind of visual alert for when it is my turn to act? When playing Poker online, or when recieving an instant message, the program title in the taskbar starts to flash. Is this possible to implement in BBO?

A couple of choices:

You are allowed to choose which alerts you hear.

You can also replace the BBO sound files with whatever sound file you want. I have Homer Simpson's "D'oh!" as an undo request. That way you can have more pleasing sounds to alert you about your turn, new deal, etc..

I think there is a relatively simple way for the BBO program to detect if it is in the minimized state when it is the user's turn to bid and to "flash" the taskbar item if appropriate. I will investigate and consider adding this feature to the next version.

In the mean time I suggest you keep the sound for "your turn to bid or play" enabled.

After it is flashing i will have to restore it and set the focus to it.

Perhaps it better to just restore it and put in front, instead of flashing.

True, but if a person is doing something "important" in another window, he might not appreciate this. It could be argued that you shouldn't be doing important things with other applications when you are playing of course, but I personally really hate it when a program decides that it is so important that it should preempt whatever else I happen to be doing.

I found a nice way to make the BBO taskbar item change color in a non-annoying way. I have implemented this for when it is the user's turn to bid/play and the BBO window is not in the foreground. The next version will contain this facility. If, after trying this, people think a stronger reminder is need, I will consider putting one in.

Great! Something like this is exactly what i was thinking about.

I'm also surprised by the quick feedback, absolutely wonderful!

Hi Mattias;

Is it the BBO sounds you find annoying, or just any sound in particular?

There are so many sound alerts for different situations that you would have to find something more pleasant to your ears for each alert.. i.e when recieving a private message, when a friend logs on, when it is your turn to bid or play, when you change tables in a tourney, when you get an invitation to a tourney, and most important, for when a tournament you have been waiting for has started....

Visual alerts with a descriptive prompt would be very practical, if it's possible :)))

I do find that the sounds are very useful though, especially when one is away from the pc (well not in some other room, unless you have stereo sound :o

At least the sound alert tells you it's time to come back ASAP :))

Having the choice is nice though :)

And Frittz, how do you get the other sounds you talk about in your post? and is it possible to have more than one personalized sound which alerts all the different situations i mentioned above?

I would love to know how to personalize them <_<

Thank you in advance...

regards,

Aisha

I have a wonderful one, which I frequently use to "update" programs that aren't as progressive as Fred's. It's called "blank.wav". 3 guesses what it sounds like, and the first two don't count...

cygwin> for $i in *.wav; do cp blank.wav $i; done; # :-)
