Contract is 5 by south

Declarer just losed a second trick to East, so the trick count is 6-2.

This is what happens now:

East leads 2

South plays K

West plays 4

North (dummy) plays 3

West says ouch er...

North (dummy) requests West to pick 4 up and change it

South (declarer) puts K as winner and picks a card to lead to next trick

East comforts West saying: It doesn´t matter, you make A in the end, 1 off. (claims 1 down)

South says no, I make the contract, ruff a spade and discard 2 hearts on diamonds.

East looks at all the cards and says, ok: then its 2 down.

How many tricks?

Yes - a trump to the A and cash 2 winning s, just losing the last trick.

No doubt what E had in mind, overlooking that S could make a mistake.

I think E would have done better to keep his mouth shut. What he said wasn't true because his partner had given a trick away by failing to take the A immediately, because he can return a spade and take the contract 2 down by force. Then he made it worse because his claim removed the possibility of S making a mistake and giving the lost trick back. Of course if E wasn't claiming his remarks would have been as legally objectionable as dummy's.

But ultimately, Campboy's analysis is spot on.

The 4 is a played card, and while North's effort to be nice is appreciated he shouldn't be participating in the play. So South wins that heart trick.

East then claimed. Having stated a line "West makes A at the end" and a number of tricks (1 off), he can't change that to two off. South's objection is indeed incorrect if East discards a diamond on the spade that gets ruffed, but a normal line for East, having claimed as he did, would be to discard a heart instead.

So, result is one off.
