How to open this hand?

2NT is reasonable. The only real alternative is 1D - planning to bid 2H over 2C, or 3NT over 1NT (there's no point showing your major now that partner denied one).

Some players have systems that can show strong three-suiters for exactly this reason.

When you get this sort of hand I look at the alternatives I face with my rebid. If partner responds a major, if I choose to open 1D, will I be happy making a splinter? If partner bids 1NT what is an attractive rebid? If partner passes is it possible I can miss game?

I am not pleased if I splinter and partner rebids game because I feel I have not done enough. If I elect to reverse I am directing my partner attention to a ratty D suit in addition to showing longer D than which ever major I should choose to bid! What will I do when they bid 3D? This action is sure to create a mess, and I think it is about the worst choice.

If you open 2NT you rate to land safely the majority of the time. For me it all boils down to which is the best lie to start with, and 2N hits the mark.
