This hand came up during a session with my mentee last night.

Afterwards I started thinking about the 3S call. This could be taken as either a spade control or spade support. If the latter, then 4NT would be key card for spades, which has a lot of potential for disaster.

Thoughts?

In the case of both majors, the first Major to be supported : is agreed as trump .

3S! therefore is a Ctrl cue bid .

4D = Ctrl, denies Ctrl .

4NT = RKCB for

..... - 5C = 0 or 3

5D ( Q-ask since the 3H support bid could be as few as 3 cards )

..... - 6H ( Q but no outside Kings )

Over 3s you might want to try 3nt by south is a serious slam try, 4d or 4h would be less. On this hand north needs south to have 3 keycards and the Qh which qualifies as a serious slay try.

Playing 3h always agrees hearts as setting trumps has its pluses and minuses, not sure about that agreement but it works on this deal.

At the table I would just keep it simple and blast to 6h after 4d.

I don't want a cuebidding or rkc disaster.

This sort of deal demands detailed agreements with a long term partner that you both remember under pressure.

I would have kept it simpler and just bid 4NT after hearing support. If that leads to a rkc disaster, we certainly shouldn't be playing rkc!

Of course but the five level is not safe hence the problem.

If you are going to bid 4NT after partner cuebids a minor, then an immediate 4NT is only worse if partner doesn't have either minor Ace. Given that, he will almost certainly have A and KQ and Q, won't he?

Hi,

I am a simple soul, 3S is a cue for hearts, but showes a top honor.

If you play 3S as showing primary fit, than a common solution is to play

6 KC Asks.

To complicate for me.

Playing the cue as showing a top honor does the job of locating missing

tophonors in the secondary suit quite well, not always, but sufficiently

often.

With kind regards

Marlowe
