With no aces and a perfectly good 1-2 description, I see no need to distort this into a 15-17 1NT.

I would think the lack of aces argues for NT over a suit contract?

I can see arguments for both 1S and 1NT (if playing 5-card stayman over 1NT). I'm forced into opening 1S because I play a weak NT; but it is also what my partner would expect me to do if we played a strong NT, I'm sure.

1 whatever my NT range

Yes, and it would be nice if the OP in this and so many other bidding threads could at least specify his NT range, and also scoring and vul as that may matter to some.

Playing normal 15-17 I see no reason to upgrade here and also no reason to distort my shape.

I would always open 1 and it going to take more than Kranyak and one or two others doing it in the BB with mixed success to convince me otherwise. Amusingly, there was a hand later in the same set where Kranyak picked up a 4333 14 and opened one of a minor. Someone commented that his strength was enough for a 15-17 NT but the shape was maybe too flat.

What your bid: 1 nt or 1 spade

I would open 1 And before the howls of protest start. Remember when you open the bidding you

promise a rebid if partner changes the suit. If you open 1 on the hand given what do you rebid over a

2 response? 2 would promise a 6 card suit,2 NT would show 15+ points. Opening 1

first means you can accommodate a 1 response with 1 . Both suits have been shown and the bidding

is kept at a low and safe level.

I guess the "Expert-Class" part of the problem is to figure out the NT range and what system is being played.

Or which one has more sense in the long term.

In a world Championship hand Usa1 open 1 nt (red) an go 1nt -3

Monaco open 1 spade and go 2spade made,

P.s, I m not an expert, only an enthusiastic of bridge

IMO 1N = 10, 1 = 9. If your partners are fanatical advocates of Gazzilli and Puppet Stayman, then you tend to get into the habit of opening 1N with a good 14-15 HCP and tenaces, even when a bit off-shape with a 5-card major.
