What's your rebid?

Would partner pass 4?

I have no idea! This thread is partly to vent as partner's hand was Qx xx Kxx AKQTxx

I bid 6[H] and went 1 off when [C]J didn't drop.

But I am interested how the bidding should/could have gone if partner had made a more sensible first bid. Where would you have ended up?

6. I think 3N by a weak partner is 3244'ish but I have more faith in partner having a doubleton heart than a tripleton spade (he won't have 4 spades). Several random minimums give reasonable slam chances. I think the field will probably be bumbling their way towards slam too.

West

Q x, x x, K x x, A K Q T x x

East

A 9 x x x, A K 8 x x x, A J, void

East West

1H - 2C ( 2/1 GF )

2S ( at least 4/5 )

.... - 3C

3S ( 5/6 )

.... - 3NT or 4H

pass

Assuming 2/1 gf:

1 2

2 2N

3 4

I think that responder can't afford more than 4 and that should be enough....the auction shouts that his club length isn't that useful, and while the spade Q is a good card, I think we need a little more to push beyond game. We are unlimited to this point and therefore should limit ourselves.

Opener has a great hand that has actually become worse with the bidding. The Axxxx in spades, in particular, is a worry. Partner is marked with a doubleton trump, so we are probably not establishing spades, which means we are having to pitch them, which in turn means very good clubs and the diamond Ace and even then we have trump issues.

I am not sure that I wouldn't make a generic slam try with 5 but I like to think I'd pass. I'm generally conservative anyway, so I think I would pass in real life but, as I often do, I'd be thinking maybe I owe partner one try. I do think that responder, when partner bids, say, 5 rather than keycarding, can infer that partner is more interested in the majors than the minors, and choose to pass..whether he can infer the void due to the lack of keycard is another question.

Your partner did not bid it well for a good field. In a weak field there is something to be said for an immediate 3NT. Anyway, I would bid 4H. The 6H bidders are having a rush of blood to the head. There are a lot of S to get rid of and the C void does not augur well for setting up Cs for no loser.
