GIB Bug Passing TOX

GIB passes takeout doubles when it knows our side does not have more than half the points.

It also passes them when it knows the opponents have a fit.

Could I suggest it only passes takeout doubles when it knows we have 22+ and it knows the opponents don't have 8 trumps at the two level or 9 trumps at the three level.

Here is an example, it should clearly bid 3S.

Sort of torn here with my sympathies.

How does GIB North on your example hand "know that our side does not have more than half the points". I calculate that you should have a combined 20-22 HCP. Not that that is a very meaningful figure in this situation, but seeing as you mentioned it.

Maybe North should pull the double to 3S, for a very small gain (-800 instead of -870). Probably would make negligible difference in practice whether MP or IMP scoring.

On the other hand it may have calculated that the only action that might rescue your side from the mire, however unlikely, is to place you with something like a 3-4-4-2 hand with a control rich 17 HCP, when you just might be taking a plus off 3C in defence, and so it bids on the assumption that you have such a hand. I don't know if GIB is that clever, really.

The total number of tricks rates to be somewhere in the region of 16, with 2 x 8 card fits floating around. That being the case, if you can make 3S then you can defeat 3C by 2 tricks. If you go one down in 3S then they go one down in 3C. If they are making 3C on the nose for 670 you are going for a 500 penalty in 3S. That last scenario is the only one (on this TNT) in which pulling the double gains, and only a modest gain at that (and then of course you could have passed them out in 3C for 110).

But seriously, double??

GIB does pass too many takeout doubles.

But players playing with GIB apparently make too many takeout doubls. Exhibit A is attached to OP's post.
