I held the south hand and made a HUGE bidding mistake bidding 6♠ (six clubs is much safer, and if it goes down, it goes down just a little). In six spades doubled, the defense starts with the ♥A and continues hearts. There is a small trick to the play no one should miss, and if spades prove to be 4-1, your slam is on a club hook and a 2-1 club split (or do you play to drop the stiff king?). And even a 3-2 spade split, you are down quite a few if you lose a club (seven maybe?). A three-oh split even onside dooms the contract. If it makes, you are plus 1660, if you hook and the finesse loses you will go down eight vulnerable (-2300). Our team-mates were one away in six diamonds (undoubled). On the other hand, if I had bid 6♣ they might have bid 6♦ leading me back to deciding if to play 6♠ or not. Since your team-mates are -100, you win 17 imps if you make this and lose 20 if you go down eight (or 19 if you hold it to down seven!!!). This is the largest potential imp swing on the play of a single card I can remember at any table where I was playing. [/hv]
benlessard
Its a good & really scary hand. I remember a similar auction of V.Demuy & G.Wolpert where Demuy bid 4M in a 3 card suit instead of bidding 5m in case partner had a 5M this style mean however that you cannot bypass 2S if you want to show 4S. G.Wolpert wasnt on the same wavelength and it backfired.
Cyberyeti
I remember a hand where I was playing 5Nx where opps had a major each and we had both minors. W's choice of lead (lead his own suit I get 11 tricks, lead his partner's they get 11) is the biggest swing on one decision I've seen in terms of tricks. They led the wrong one and got the discards wrong so I made 12. The other is a lead problem. Get the right lead you gain 14, get the wrong lead you lose 20. [hv=pc=n&s=sa42hkdaj752cq742&d=n&v=b&b=13&a=4s5h5s6h6s7hdppp]133|200[/hv] Lead A♠ or K♥ = -2470, lead a minor =+5-800, the dummy was K, xxx, Qxx, AKJ10xx and partner has QJ10xxxxxx, x, Kxx, void
