Board 56 Semi-finals Mini SpringoldA

Atlanta was a lot of fun. I will post some interesting hands from NABC, but this one was the last hand from a long and very close match.

At the end of the third quarter, your team was down 23 imps with 14 boards to go. The first 13 boards seven partscores, the most likely idea is you won a few imps on average over these. Five automatic games bid and made, and one touch and go game where their side went down in three notrump and it looks like 4H in 4-4 fit would make, but they are not vul). It is reasonable that you made up some ground, but it seems clear you are still behind in the match. Then this was the last hand.

[hv=pc=n&w=s654ha3dj84cqt542&d=w&v=n&b=8&a=pp1sd2s3hp4np5cp6n?]130|200|You are West with this holding (IMPS, NS vul, you deal). You start off with a pass, normal enough, as does North. You partner is in there with a 1 opening bid and your RHO makes a takeout double.

You are playing a simple gadget, 2 here by you is a "good raise" to 2 and a direct 2 is just competitive. So you bid 2, LHO finds enough to bid 3 and partner passes. Oh great, another part-score hand when you need a swing. Oh well.

But your LHO takes a long time to bid, and then surprises you with a leap to 4NT, which you pass. The tray goes to the other side and comes back with North bidding 5. Your screen-mate writes 1-4 keycards for hearts. He thinks some more and then bids 6NT.

First decide if you double, second what you are going to lead.

partner psyched, RHO has a big lot of running diamonds, spade stop and AK. But why didn't East bid 6 if he is only afraid of hearts?

You need to know your opponents better, but as stupid as it sounds I am very tempted to lead a heart, not sure if low or high, but lead one. Spade seems useless, and partner failed to double 5, so only a heart can damage.

Low heart worries me, is it possible partner will withhold a top honour ?

Dummy was a surprise, but you don't ask north what 5 meant.

TRICKS

  1. 6     9     8     A
  2. K     3     2     T
  3. 6    A     4     7

Your carding agreement is very extensive, but to keep the problem interesting, let's assume standard carding but with some kind of normal bridge logic. Your lead to trick three.

partner is screaming for a diamond switch, so I lead one.

Right you are!. I was East and decided to open 1 in 3rd seat (everyone would bid something). Partner was critical of me for not opening some number of diamonds. Sigh.

North wrote that 4NT "NOT BLACKWOOD, BOTH MINORS", explaining the 5 bid. To make the diamond lead even more obvious, we have a specific agreement that if dummy is winning the first trick with a card as low as the JACK (and no higher card in dummy) then our spot card is S/P, so the 8 is S/P for diamonds. Count in hearts by EAST also unneeded so the T again shouting diamonds. Partner lead another spade. Sigh... packed up and headed home from Atlanta a day early. :(
