  1. 1. What do you open

Recommended Posts

2/1 system, both vulnerable, first seat, your hand:

T5

AKQ862

J74

J5

What do you open?

1;

2;

3

I consider the hand too weak for 1 and way too strong for 3

This leaves 2

I toyed with the idea of passing and then blamed the impulse on the percoset...

I thought I had completely lost it. I read the comments first and found three players stating that they would open 2. I thought that this was an absolutely wtp 1 opening bid.

Then I voted and found that a strong majority (4-2 counting my vote) had voted for 1. [Clearly, one of the posters above did not vote, or misvoted]

I may still be losing it. But at least I have company.

Ah, you still have all your marbles Art. I figured the majority would be for 1. Vul, first seat, it just isn't my style. I count the stray jacks as zero btw.

All i have is hearts, nothing much else. I want to play 2H if partner doesnt have an excelent card. I think 2H shows that the best. If opps bid after, i have told p i have 6H(The upside of 2h), and nothing much extra

2 - 10

1 - 9

3 - 4

In 3rd/4th with some sort of Drury available I'd open 1 for sure.

I think you have these the wrong way round.

In 1st/2nd seats, I prefer 1. You'll miss quite a few games if you open 2, unless you have agreed to play 'constructive weak twos'.

In 3rd seat, pre-empts should be a wider range. Game is unlikely opposit a passed hand so opening 2 makes sense.

In 4th seat, the range for a weak 2 is stronger anyway (say 9-12, just pass with a weaker hand) so this hand fits the bill.

The reason I don't like 1H in 1st and 2nd is that I think the chance of partner taking my opening seriously and getting us too high on a misfit is too great. The J's are essentially worthless in the short suits. I also have practically negative defensive tricks.

I gravitate toward 3H at equal (the obvious bid if you don't have the two garbage jacks), but have no objection to 1H.

I'll never play you for this much if you open 2H at equal.

Hi,

for me, only 1H or 3H is an option, but I would go with 1H.

With kind regards

Marlowe

There seems to be some disagreement about whether 2 or 3 shows a stronger hand.

3H showes a hand, that can produce 1 trick more than a hand that would have opened 2H.

From this point of view, 3H is showing a stronger hand than 2H, at least with regards

of trick taking power

It is a matter of style and system and seat.

I have one p where this is a wtp 2, albeit a max, in any seat. In 4th seat it is a wtp 2 anyway. In 3rd seat, where you're not likely to miss game by pre-empting, 2 is certainly OK and 3 is not crazy. In 1st or 2nd seat, for anyone whose system/style is even slightly tolerant of light openings, this is a wtp 1.

For someone in 1st or 2nd whose system/style is not tolerant of light openings, but whose weak twos are known to be a touch loose at times - erm - well - I am not you, but you have a tough choice. Very sound openings (1x) and agressive pre-empts has its advantages - but you have to realise that sometimes you're a bit snookered by hands like this.

You guys do realize it's a 6-4 hand, right? :P

How can you notice the hand is 6-4 and not call the Director about the duplicated 5? Assuming there are some clubs mixed in there too, the hand looks way too good for a weak 2 opening as taught in England; but both China and America are on different continents.
