Even trained patnerships get problems

My partner (namelly My father Federico Goded) and I had a good laugh today, after first seassion of a 3 seasson tourney we were going first with 68%, when playing last round of 13 director came to the table and asked how were we performing (kinda unnusual question actually). My fatther replied: nearer than 80% than 70%, and so the director replied, so it is not an error!, you have 80% on first 24 boards, we all had a good laugh.

We were having 2 top scores on boards 23,24, but at 25 I failed to achieve 80% at the end, nevertheless, its my highest ever, you can check scores here:

and here is my mistake:

[hv=d=s&v=e&s=s3h1073dqj1087643c2]133|100|Scoring: MP

S - W - N - E

3 -ps -3NT-ps

4 -ps -4 -ps

???[/hv]

3 opening wasn't the best maybe, but 4 was unavaible cos of partership agreements, of course you don't wanna play 3NT and now you have to understand the meaning of 4 and what do you want to play. (3-3 would be forcing).

Sorry Fluffy, but pulling 3NT to 4D is unconscionable; this totally lacks discipline. You have NO idea why your Dad bid 3NT, - 7 C tricks a D void and two outside Aces? Who knows. I pass 4H and guess that the 4H bidder has a decent 4/5 card suit

If i had to think of the best usfull meaning for this bid, it would be natural 5 card suit. Still i wouldnt bid 4H with this hand because i would afraid partner wont be on the same wave. If partner bids 4h i would pass it even tho i would be very nervous doing it.

Nice score

I understand you running from 3NT. It contradicts conventional wisdom, but conventional wisdom doesn't take into account your 4 opening being conventional! Under the conditions I would open 5.

What hand would bid 4 that would also bid 3NT over 3? I think it has got to be natural - 5 weakish hearts, 5 solid clubs, a diamond honour and the A or K of spades? 6 Solid hearts and a small singleton diamond? I pass.

Since you said 3D-3H is forcing. I think 4H is cue. Clearly ur running from 3N is wrong. Why cannot pd have DAKx? It is possible. Now I take 4H as cue and I will bid 4S. Of course I can be very wrong but since you pulled from 3N to 4D, you must assume 3N is wrong and you are right. Even if you can make 5D, it will score less than 3N. So I think you should try slam. Bidding 6D after 4H might not be a bad idea.

You won by close to SIX boards. Thats unheard of. Nice job.

You didn't get this kind of score by opening hands like this 3 at green, however.

Sit for 3N - your dad plays the hands well <_<

ITs not over yet, ther eis a third seasson to be played, but I won't because I took a week vacation with my brother and can't play, still I think my sub will be able to handle with 23% advantage :), ,BTW even best declarers will have problems playing 3NT unless they have 3 cards in or a solid side suit.

  • 2 weeks later...

I though similar to flytoox, 4 was a cue, and I had both the controls partner didn't had so I settled for 6.

Partner´s hand:

Axxx

KJx

Ax

AQ10x

6 that proven to be a huge mistake, if partner had the cards to win slam he would had probably tried over 3, before biding 3NT, with his hand 6 even had a chance, but not today, 2 off and -100 meant 47% score (beating only those at 3NT with 4 quick downs) while 5 was -50 and 67%, enough for reaching 80.

Dear Fluffy,

you should reconsider opening that hand. It is most likely that you are prempting your partner. With 37 HCP out, your p will usually have 12 and there is a good chance that he will bid even if your LHO opens. With your hand, you can aford to wait, since you can always bit 3,4,5,6 , when it is your turn to bid again.

But then you know, if your partner is "strong" or not.
