ArtK78
Turned out to be right to pass (or double) 4♠. It was very close. Both 4♠ and 5 of a minor could be making.
lycier
For me,I cuebid 2♣ showed exactly 3♠ support with limited values,so I never cuebid 2♣ but 2nt so as to show my 9 hcp plus with 4 card support.
quiddity
At table 1 I prefer a blast or a fit-jump with West. No messing around with 4-6 w/r.At table 2 I prefer a double from North over 4♠. 4NT is too unilateral. If partner doesn't have a stiff you probably don't want to be at the 5-level.

awm
The West hand is one where you have to create some pressure. A common mistake is trying to conduct a delicate auction in competition on a fitting hand like this. It's true that 4♠ may not make (in fact it will not), but blasting to the four-level has a lot of ways to win. Even a world class N-S will sometimes misjudge on such a sequence, whereas taking it slow gives them little chance to err.

Losing for bidding to 5m with 19 total tricks is very unlucky.
gwnn
Losing for bidding to 5m with 19 total tricks is very unlucky.Sorry but I don't know how N knew there were 19 total tricks. S did not yet support either minor suit. Opps will often have only a 9-card fit and partner can still have something like 2533 or thereabouts. If he has something more offensive than that, see below. Art: if partner has a stiff and a good fit he can still pull the X. This is not a penalty double, or at least it shouldn't be.

This is not a penalty double, or at least it shouldn't be.1♣ - (1♠) - x - (4♠) - x Partner knows very little about my hand. Saying that if he has a good fit and a singleton might lead him to pull the double is fine if he has a club fit. But what if he has a diamond fit? Besides, he will probably sit for the double much more often than not, even if he does have a club fit and a singleton.

Basically, I think partner should sit the double if balanced, but never sit it with a stiff spade.
